Kolkata People’s Film Festival

17 January - 20 January

The Kolkata People’s Film Festival (KPFF), an initiative of the People’s Film Collective, started in 2013. Over the past few years, it has grown by leaps and bounds, becoming a critical part of the counter-culture movement in the city and beyond.

The festival, held over four days, does not charge for entry. Anyone is welcome to attend.

KPFF is collectively programmed, keeping in mind not only quality but also topicality and social relevance. The goal of the festival is to encourage debate and discussion around issues that are sometimes forgotten, or swept under the rug. Or even worse, tiptoed around. From communalism to caste and prejudice, workers rights, the right to self-determination, environmental issues and many more.

Films are interspersed with talks and panel discussions based on issues raised by the screenings. Filmmakers are invited to share their experiences and thoughts. The audience is always made a part of the process, with a free give and take of opinions. The festival is not restricted to within the hall. A stall with books and DVDs outside is often the hub of many a discussion. Filmmakers, activists, students, parents, grandparents and school children sharing their thoughts, ideologies, and feelings over cups of tea and books.
